The Mottes tension lysimeters were developed in Israel and are used to monitor the nutrients in the soil solution surrounding the plant roots.  A second tube is established deeper in the soil profile to monitor nutrients that are being lost through leaching.  By regularly monitoring the levels of nutrition at the two depths, a grower can accurately schedule fertilizer applications.  Used properly, this system can decrease fertilizer inputs  and reduce environmental contamination.
